Friendliness

If friendliness is so important, how do we define it?

Church visitors determine the friendliness of a church by the number of people who talked to them (www.ChurchGrowth.net).

Churches usually think of themselves as friendly because the regular attenders have several friends to talk to before and after the worship service. But this natural attraction can often “freeze out” the new person who wanders in to a church service. Unless there is a conscious effort to look for and welcome these “outsiders,” the new person will feel excluded and unwelcome.

There is a 10-minute window that is the most crucial in determining the friendliness of a church by a visitor. It is not the first 10 minutes the person arrives at the church. (This is the second most important period.) The most important time is the 10 minutes immediately following the service.

What do most church members do after the service? They find their friends and catch up on what happened the past week.

At the Wesleyan Community Church we want to create a mindset that puts the needs and feelings of our guests before our own. We want to look for and welcome every guest to our church before we settle down with our friends and catch up on “things.”
